Pastor, former President of the International Federation of the Blue Cross from 1929 to 1941.

His nickname was given to him when he went to see his daughter Martha in Lausanne and took the opportunity to go to the movies.

Dr Junod was in charge of numerous missions throughout the world for the International Red Cross. He obtained his doctor's diploma in 1929.

After a period of probation at the Geneva cantonal Hospital, he became clinical chief assistant in Mulhouse. It is there that in 1935 he received for the first time a call from the International Red Cross committee, who charged him of a mission in Ethiopia where war had started.

In 1936, Dr Junod went to Spain during the civil war, as delegate general of the IRCC. He remained there in that role, after having established with both sides in conflict, the bases of the action of the International committee. He organized numerous prisoners exchanges.

In 1939, still at the service of the IRCC, he organized important missions in numerous countries. Dr Junod was one of the first European allowed by the americans to go to Hiroshima after the explosion of the first atomic bomb. He described his experience in a book called "le troisième combattant" (ed. Ringier, 1947).

In 1947 he worked for the United Nations and, in 1948, was in charge of a mission in China on behalf of the UNICEF, mission interrupted following sickness.

Dr Junod went back to active medicine, specializing in anesthesia. He was appointed member of the International Red Cross Committee in 1952 of which he was a very active element. He still accomplished a few more missions.

It is in the middle of his work as Chief doctor of the department of anesthesia of the cantonal Hospital of Geneva that Dr Junod died.

Orla Hugh Junod (1875 - 1954)

Born Sep 24, 1875 in White Pigeon, Michigan, USA. Son of Charles Auguste Junod and Caroline née Steininger. He died Apr 3rd, 1954 in Butte Hospital, MT.

His activities took him over most of the state. He was High school principal at Marysville, was employed by the Elkhorn Mining company, ranched at Wolf Creek and in the Rubby Valley. He was Madison's county senator for eight years and became President pro tem of the senate. He was state treasurer from 1923 to 1925.

After leaving that office he went to Billings and formed a real estate company of Junod and Caldwell. He served as director of the Security and Loan association in the Midland Empire. In 1928 he was named President of the Federal and Land Bank in Spokane, a position he held for eight years.

He served as Madison county commissioner by appointment six years ago. Since that time he has been retired and lived in Sheridan. He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine in Helena.

Rose Henriette Elizabeth Junod (1861-1940)

Sister Elisabeth did all her studies in Neuchâtel where M. Henri Junod (her father) was called as pastor in 1868.

She passed her state exam as primary teacher with great success. In 1881, she enters the "Maison des diaconesses" of Strasbourg (France), whose sisters managed at the time the Hospital Pourtalès in Neuchâtel.

The Junod family was very much linked to the diaconesses of Strasbourg, and it is in the middle of this active charity environment that sister Elizabeth felt the blow of her future vocation.

After having spent 10 years in Alsace, she came back to Neuchâtel where, relatively young, she was appointed to take the management of the Hospital Pourtalès, in 1891.

Ruth Junod (1895-1969)

She was for long the director of a Central acoustical equipment center of the "société romande de lutte contre les effets de la surdité", going through all villages of our county to help deaf come out of their isolation. Her kindness and sense of charity turned her patients to become her friends. The central committee, recognizing her work, appointed her as member of honor of the SRLS.

JUNOD DE TRAVERS

Henri Auguste Junod (1802-1870)

Summarized Biography

Distiller, founder of the second largest factory of Absinthe of the nearby french town of Pontarlier.

His son Félix "Arthur" industrialized the business before his grandson Jean Joseph "Auguste" took over.

His grandson Auguste was also a flight passionate in Pontarlier: the beginning of the aeronautical history of Pontarlier took place on October 29, 1910 by Auguste Junod on his Farman biplane of 50 cv.

This first flight caused the admiration of the large crowd that had come to admire this magic machine.
